Downs has been assigned to another team.

The move was reported by the first person.

Mookie Betts was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in February 2020 in exchange for Downs.

The decision to DFA Downs was made after the Red Sox signed Masataka Yoshida. Boston had room on its 40-man roster for Yoshida.

In the deal that sent Betts and Price to L.A., Boston got Downs, Verdugo, and Wong from the Dodgers.

Downs was once a top five prospect in the Boston organization, but his stock took a nosedive over the last two seasons as he struggled to live up to expectations in Triple-A.

Downs hit.191/.272/.333 in 99 games with the WooSox in 2021. He slashed.197/.316/.912 with 16 home runs and 33RBI 81 games in his next season.

Downs appeared in 14 games for Boston last season, hitting.154/.171/.252 with one home run and fourRBI. He struck out in 21 of 41 appearances.

Boston lost the Betts deal with only Verdugo and Wong left to show for it.

Betts slashed.270/.340/.533 with a career-high 35 home runs in a career-high 142 games in a season in which he also stole 22 bases. In the last three seasons, the Dodgers have made the playoffs and won the World Series.

Some of the league's best, like Triston Casas and Ceddanne Rafaela, are not included in the Red Sox's prospect pool.
