The student was arrested at the university for not apologizing to the professor. Cynthia Villagomez called police on Leilla Marie after she refused to change her presentation.

@okayybriaaA ✋🏻 professor at Winston Salem State University, Had a student arrested this morning for not apologizing to her after she raised her voice at her in response to the professor for raising her voice first. The ✋🏻 cop is also just as problematic because he threatens to arrest students on numerous occasions. There needs to be justice for Leila right now and I will not stop until the professor and the Officer are fired.♬ original sound – Okayybriaa

There are videos that show Leilla Marie being ed out by police officers.

I won't apologize and you're going to take me out in handcuffs? Marie spoke.

According to documents from the Forsyth County Magistrate’s Office, the 20-year-old student is facing a misdemeanor of disorderly conduct. Her court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2023 at 9 a.m. A WSSU leader tells me police followed campus, police & public safety policies.

Marie was released with a 2nd degree felony. The stages of the argument that led to her arrest were described by her. Marie claims that Villagomez told her that her group project was incorrect and needed to be revised. On the same day, the project was supposed to be presented.

Marie came to class because she wanted to present with her group, but Villagomez told her it would impact her grade.

Marie claims the professor told her to leave the class after the two yelled at each other. Marie stayed in the class. Police were called to the campus after Villagomez reported the incident to another professor.

The white campus police officer ordered a black officer to arrest Marie because she and the professor refused to apologize to each other. She claims the black officer was doing his best not to arrest her, but when the white officer arrived she was put in handcuffs.

Marie feels like she was not guilty of anything other than the F-bomb. She was arrested for the same Resisting Arrest charge.

The statement from the HBCU acknowledged they are aware of the incident. The police are trying to diffuse the incident. There will be an investigation following Marie's allegations.

There was an incident this morning involving a student and a faculty member that has been going on for a while. The statement said that they wanted to share some key information with the community.

The university has a process in place when there is a reported incident. There was a lot of noise in Carolina Hall this morning. A WSSU employee called for help after they tried to de-escalate the situation.

Weaponization of police is a problem in our community, but that is not what happened in this incident. All of our faculty, staff, and students feel respected and supported. We will take swift and appropriate measures against any situation that undermines those ideals. The situation has caused a lot of trauma to those involved and our campus community as a whole, but we know that every available resource is being extended to bring a resolution.

Marie won't be going back or continuing her studies with the HBCU.

Marie said she wouldn't be representing WSSU on her social media. With a lot of confidence, I say that WSSU doesn't deserve my representation.

She was arrested for not apologizing to a white professor. I came here for a different experience than the one I got, and I think I would have been arrested at a public library before I got arrested at my HBCU.

Marie is going to be in court.
