The manager of Portugal has left the job.

Portugal was knocked out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals by a single goal.

During his eight years in charge of Portugal, he guided the team to victory at Euro 2016 and the inaugural Uefa Nations League.

His final games were dominated by his decision to not have him in the knockouts.

Following a negative reaction to being substituted during the final group game against South Korea, Santos decided to drop the 37 year old before the last 16 meeting with Switzerland.

Portugal won the game against Switzerland 6-1, but were stunned in the last eight as they became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals.

The Portuguese Football Association thanks Fernando Santos and his technical team for the services they have provided over the course of eight years.

The next national coach will be chosen by the FPF board.
