The end of the year is a good time to open a new premium rewards credit card. Some of them offer statement credits that reset with the calendar year, while others offer limited-time bonuses or promotions.

It is possible to meet the spending requirements for a big sign-up bonus by increasing spending around the holidays.

There's a side-by-side comparison of the best credit cards.

There are a few reasons to open a new premium card before the end of the year, and how to maximize the card's benefits.

Double dip on End-of-year spending credits

Premium credit cards have perks that change annually. If you open a new credit card in December, you will be able to double dip on savings within a short period by taking advantage of your card's benefits. There are examples.

  • Up to $100 in annual statement credits toward Saks Fifth Avenue purchases with The Platinum Card® from American Express. This is available as up to $50 in credits in each half of the year (enrollment is required in advance).
  • Up to $400 in annual statement credits toward Dell purchases in the U.S. with The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. This is available as up to $200 in credits semi-annually (enrollment is required in advance).

Don't let credits go to waste.

You may be able to double dip with this strategy.

  • Up to $250 in statement credits toward airline incidental fees via the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card (enrollment is required in advance).
  • Up to $100 in statement credits for airline incidentals with the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card.
  • Up to $200 in statement credits for airline incidentals with your preferred airline on the Amex Platinum Card and Amex Business Platinum Card (enrollment is required in advance).
  • Up to $200 in statement credits for prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection bookings (minimum two-night stay required) with the Amex Platinum Card.

Leverage opportunities to use your points and miles

Whether it's the sign-up bonus or the earnings from your everyday spending, there are more options for using your points and miles. An excellent example is the expanded partnership between Emirates and Air Canada, the latter of which requires just 5000 Aeroplan points for a stop.

More awards are available online and website problems are going away as a result of new and expanded partnerships. It's a good time to find and book award travel online. There is some redemption inspiration to be found here.

You will be able to use points from a new card to cover your family's travel. Adding a premium credit card to your wallet is a good way to offset the costs of travel.

Gift perks to others for the holidays

You can give premium credit cards as gifts. When choosing gifts for friends and family, consider these.

If you have an Amex Business Platinum Card, you can use it to make purchases at certain stores. The gifts may have no out-of-pocket costs because of the statement credits you receive.

Lounge access to a traveler is a gift you can give. Adding a family member to your Amex Platinum Card, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, or Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard would be a good way to do this. Remember that you're responsible for all spending by authorized users on your account, but free access to lounges before flights would be an appreciated gift.

There is a battle between authorized users and premium travel credit card benefits.

Receive a generous welcome offer

Welcome offers may be the biggest reason to apply for a credit card. The ability to qualify for a windfall of points or miles in a short period is appealing and your holiday shopping can help you meet the spending requirements for earning these bonuses.
