After Man of Steel star Henry Cavill confirmed late Wednesday that he had been dropped from the next Superman film, speculation grew about whether his involvement with the film cost him his job in The Witcher and whether he could be the next James Bond.
The head of the new DC Studios told him he wouldn't be returning as Superman in another DC film after all.
He said that the studio encouraged him to reprise the role in October before the new directors were hired.
In October, it was announced that he would not return for the fourth season of The Witcher and would be replaced by Liam Hemsworth, news that was widely understood to mean he chose to leave to focus on other projects.
The British actor could become the next James Bond after he said earlier this year that he was runner-up to Daniel Craig for the role in the first James Bond movie.
The next DC Superman movie will focus on an earlier part of the character's life, and would be too young to be played by Cavill again, but the three discussed opportunities to work together in the future. There are few details about the new Superman project, only that it will be a movie and that he has been writing it for a long time. He said he and Ben Affleck are in talks to direct a film.
After taking on the role of Superman in the film Man of Steel, he went on to reprise his role in multiple DC projects, including Justice League and Black Adam, as well as an uncredited appearance in the film. New leadership at DC may affect other projects. Wonder Woman 3 will not be moving forward, according to reports.
The Comeback brings to DC Films what Superman returns to.
