The Trust and Safety Council, a wide-ranging group of global civil rights advocates, academics, and experts who have advised the company since 2016, was dissolved on Monday. Musk has welcomed back previously banned extremists. Meninist, a "men's rights" account with more than a million followers, is one of the people who have been restored.
Advertisers have left in droves due to Musk's enthusiasm for eliminating jobs, cutting costs and undoing safety infrastructure. Half of the company's top 100 advertising clients lost business at one point, and it missed US ad revenue expectations by as much as 80%. Difficult questions are posed for the brands that remain. The company no longer enforces its policy on misinformation.
Others are finding it harder to justify their presence on the site as people who like Musk return to posting. A million users may have been lost in a few days after Musk took over. Even if they haven't deleted their accounts, others are giving up on the social networking site. On December 9th, Elton John quit the social networking site, citing the site's policy change on misinformation.
Hoaxy was created by Indiana University and was used by MIT Technology Review to show how information is spread on social media. The results show that Musk has a new role in this network.
The tool plots interactions visually, showing the connections between individual accounts on a specific topic and indicating whether that account is the one to amplify the search term to others or be mentioned by accounts that are doing so The accounts that are more active in conversations are called nodes.
We looked at both "Groomer" and "OK groomer" from Friday, December 9, through the afternoon of Sunday, December 11, in order to understand usage of the "groomer" slur. On December 14, we ran a second query which showed the same results. According to a report from GLAAD and Media Matters, the word has been used more and more during Musk's tenure. He has been tagged many times by others who are using it.
Sometimes these users are looking for attention and amplification from the guy who owns the social networking site, in order to identify potential targets for harassment. Jack Dorsey, the company's founder and former CEO, was tagged in conversations where the slur is used to attack those who disagree with Musk on the social networking site. Musk interacts with a number of power users and fans, including conservative meme accounts and far-right celebrities.
Musk is joining in with the conversations. He said last weekend that his pronouns are Prosecute. When Scott Kelly publicly pleaded with him not tomock and promote hate toward already marginalized and at-risk of violence members of the #LGBTQ + community, Musk replied, "Forcing your pronouns upon others when they didn't ask, and implicit ostracizing those who do."
