Two years after the launch of the AirPods Max, there are still no rumors about a successor, so what can we expect from the next iteration?

After months of rumors, the AirPods Max began arriving with customers two years ago, but the device now seems to be showing its age, with the second- generation AirPods Pro adding a range of technological innovations that the AirPods Max lack.

There have been very few rumors about the next-gen AirPods Max. In May of 2021, Mark Gurman said that Apple wasn't working on a second-generation AirPods Max, and that there wasn't any color options for the first- generation.

New Features

Gurman's claim in October that the next version of AirPods Max will have a built-in cable was the most recent mention. We don't have any concrete rumors from reliable sources about what the new model could offer, but there is some evidence that could give us some clues about what to expect.

Gurman said that the AirPods Max had suffered from several development challenges, such as problems with the headband being too tight, leading to multiple delays and scaling back of functions. Some of the features that were scrapped in the first version of the device could be reintroduced in the second iteration of the device.

It was thought that AirPods Max would be similar to the Apple Watch bands. The replaceable headband concept was predicted to be dropped by Apple in order to speed up production.

In the final AirPods Max design, there is evidence of this concept. The headband can be removed from the headphones. To do this, users need to remove the magnetic ear cushions, fold the earcups, and insert a sim card into a hole above the speaker.

When the earcups are removed, the spokes on either side of the headband show a small Lightning-style connection for transferring power and data between the earcups. It is possible that this is a remnant of the original approach to AirPods Max. The earcups can be changed out for another color.

It was thought that the left and right ear detection of the AirPods Max would allow users to reverse the headphones' orientation. The Digital Crown appears to be the replacement for this in the final product.

There were rumors that there would be two different versions of the AirPods Max. Jon Prosser said that there would be a "luxury variant" for $599 and a "sport-like variant" for $350 for the new AirPods Max. The cheaper $350 "sport variant" has yet to emerge, despite Prosser's $599 price tag being close to the retail price. The lower-end version of the AirPods Max could be released in the future.

Some of these features could be offered by the second-gen AirPods Max.

Launch Date

Since the beginning of the year, at least one new product has been released. It has taken Apple two and a half to three years to update each of the devices. The pattern suggests that the next device to get a refresh will be the AirPods Max.

  1. AirPods (first-generation): September 2016
  2. AirPods (second-generation): March 2019 (two years and six months after previous generation)
  3. ‌AirPods Pro‌ (first-generation): October 2019
  4. AirPods Max: December 2020
  5. AirPods (third-generation): October 2021 (two years and six months after previous generation)
  6. ‌AirPods Pro‌ (second-generation): September 2022 (two years and 11 months after previous generation)
  7. AirPods Max (second-generation): June to November 2023?

It's possible for Apple to wait even longer to update the device. Past launch dates can give insight into the patterns to be expected from the company. With the same fate as the HomePod, there is a slim chance that the AirPods Max won't be updated. It's too early to say at the moment.
