TheEdwards are Christian missionaries from Canada. They ran a ministry.

The ASLAN International Ministry had an average monthly payroll expenses of over $2.7 million and over 480 employees, according to the indictment. According to prosecutors, those numbers were not real.

The ASLAN International loan was approved by the government in 2020.

A long investigation

In April 2020 investigators began to see some red flags around the loan.

An investigation by NBC News found that the ministry's accountant had dementia and hadn't done any work for the organization in a year.

Garbage bags full of shredded documents and electronic devices were found by the highway patrol when they pulled over theEdwards family.

The Bureau of Justice published a research manual on money flow through financial institutions.

It took 18 months for the charges to be filed despite the evidence.

Evan and his son appeared before a judge at the federal courthouse in central Florida. According to WESH-2 News, Josh didn't answer the judge's questions. A judge ordered a mental health evaluation.

The community's reaction has been mixed.
