According to multiple news outlets, the man charged with attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband told police he intended to target other high-profile figures, including the president's son and the governor of California.
According to the Associated Press and other outlets, a San Francisco police sergeant testified during a preliminary hearing on Wednesday that David DePape listed Tom Hanks as one of his possible targets.
In a video of his police interview played in court Wednesday, DePape said he broke into the Pelosis' San Francisco home in search of the House speaker.
Federal authorities did not say who else DePape planned to target or whether he acted on those plans.
Police body camera footage showed DePape lunging at Paul Pelosi with a hammer in the doorway of the Pelosis' San Francisco home.
The San Francisco District Attorney's office confirmed to Forbes that a judge ruled there was enough evidence for DePape to go to trial on state charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. In federal court, DePape was accused of trying to kidnapping a U.S. official. 13 years to life in prison on state charges and up to 50 years on federal charges is what DePape could face if he is convicted.
According to law enforcement officials, DePape was going to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and question her about her lies. He encountered Paul Pelosi instead of the House speaker during the early-morning break-in, leading the speaker's husband to call for help, and soon after police arrived, they spotted Pelosi and DePape struggling over the hammer he used to attack Pelosi. Paul Pelosi was released from the hospital days after he was injured. A trail of social media posts endorsing conspiracy theories was left by DePape before the attack.
Nancy Pelosi will step down from her position as House Democratic leader early next year as Republicans take control of the house. The speaker's daughter told CNN that the attack contributed to her mother stepping aside.
