Robert Saleh announces Zach Wilson will be backup QB vs. Lions (0:52)

The backup quarterback to Mike White was explained by Robert. It was :52.

11:56 AM ET

Wilson will be in uniform for the first time in four weeks on Sunday.

Wilson, who was benched in favor of Mike White, will be the second quarterback for the game against the Detroit Lions.

It is significant because White is dealing with a rib injury. Although his practice time was limited, he is expected to start. The injury was not disclosed by the Jets.

White's injury, along with Flacco's ineffective relief outing Sunday in a 20-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills, seem to have opened the door for Wilson's elevation.

Wilson was inactive on Sundays and spent the past three weeks as a scout team quarterback. The benching was called a "reset" by the Jets because they wanted him to get better without having to prepare for a game.

"Zach has been doing a great job." Over the last three weeks, he has been deliberate in his approach. He's held himself accountable for how he wants to attack practice, how he's been performing in practice, going against our defense, which I think is a pretty good defense to go against. He's been working on a lot of the things we've asked him to do.

The window for playing Wilson again before the end of the season is closing. Unless White falls out of contention, the Jets will continue with him. He said he would take it week by week. The offense is scoring 22 points per game with White at quarterback and he is only 1-2 as the starter. It has averaged less than 300 yards and 21 points with Wilson.

Wilson is a very talented young man. This is Mike White's opportunity, and he's attacking the heck out of it. He is doing well with it.

We have to make sure we do everything we can to develop him to a spot we know he can get to.

White was knocked out of the game twice by the Bills' pass rush. It wasn't pretty when Flacco came off the bench. He lost the ball on a strip sack and only completed one pass for a yard.

White finished the game after a medical evaluation. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital. He told reporters that he was ready to start against the Lions.

He said that they were still working as if he was playing this week.

This is the second time this year that Flacco has been demoted to third string. The Jets made White the QB2 in October.

While Wilson recovered from knee surgery, Flacco started the first three games.

Wilson was benched after a 77-yard passing performance in a 10-3 loss to the New England Pats, a game in which he completed only 9 of 22 passes.

He refused to take responsibility for the poor performance by the offense in his news conference. Sources said that the decision to sit him down was caused by that. Wilson apologized a few days after the game.

The Jets could be without their star defensive tackle, who didn't practice and is questionable to play. The wide receiver is on target to play on Sunday despite not practicing.
