During one of the biggest sports weekends of the year, Ricky Williams sat on a couch and smoked a joint to celebrate his cannabis lifestyle brand "Highsman".

The brand of Williams is similar to the one that the Texas running back won in 1998, according to a pronunciation guide. A few decades ago, Highsman hats, T-Shirts, and product were on display with a graphic of Williams exhaling over the words.

New York City has begun to see the recreational use of marijuana. It is legal to possess and partake even though the plans are not going well. There were little packets of marijuana with Williams on the cover in this room on 25th St. Light and inhale, that's what the instructions say.

The culture is catching up with Williams. Even if I didn't know what a "cannabis lifestyle" might be, Williams has been a fan of the herb for a long time. It was impossible to give Williams a pass when he was drafted because he was so good.

Usually the guys who get in trouble for drugs are the lower-level guys that you don't know about. It seems like I made a statement by walking away from the top of the game.

After announcing his retirement in 2004, Williams tested positive for marijuana twice before playing again in 2005, and again in February of 2006 when he again violated the NFL's policy. He played in the Canadian Football League for a year. He is the subject of a 30 for 30 documentary called Run Ricky Run, which shows his gentle and curious spirit, his search for meaning beyond himself and football, and the damage that did to his football career.

The rules that were in place at the time made it difficult for people to use and sell marijuana.

When college players were making money off their names and a pre-game show could present yards and carries, could Williams have imagined a sporting universe where he could legally blaze it up? Is it possible that Ricky Williams could have hallucinated that the NHL has four official sports betting partners and that the NBA has a new arena?

The cannabis stuff isn't a big deal because everything has changed. That is natural to me. The old way of doing things is usually replaced by a new way of growth and evolution. I am older and I can look back at history and think about that.

Williams paused to survey the community under the haze, a large caddy cornered television blocking part of the Manhattan skyline with Monday Night Football, "this."

Williams is an advocate of the chronic who smokes what he preaches. The full spectrum of game-day pain was revealed by the Toradol shots that wore off on Monday. As he spoke he exhaled to the other side.

Williams said that cannabis is about prevention When I started smoking, I stopped taking Toradol and took an extra 30 minutes to stretch. Cannabis gives you a false sense of security because it makes you more in touch with your body, whereas Vicodin makes you less in touch with your body.

In another 10 years, Highsman won't be the NFL's official cannabis partner, with "spark greatness" plastered under jumbotrons in states where the bud is legal. The National Football League has official gaming partners even though gambling on sports isn't allowed in most places. Ricky Williams would star in a halftime commercial with whichever Manning was in the league at that time.

The whole cannabis lifestyle thing became clear when the smokier the room got. I had a conversation with the co- founder of Highsman. These parties are only part of the brand's outreach. A flag football team will be sponsored by Highsman.

I nodded and agreed that it was about the community.

The harder guests began hitting the snack table. The first things to go were the packets of Big League Chew and the peanut butter cups. I wondered how much we had at home, and how good it was to have a bowl of oatmeal with a banana slice. It would be nice if a cannabis lifestyle involved cereals.

A partygoer came over to say he was leaving at halftime. He wanted to pay more attention to the game after enjoying the event.

He said that he had a lot of money on it.
