According to multiple reports, Sam Bankman- Fried appeared Tuesday at a hearing in the Bahamas with his parents in attendance.
The former FTX CEO indicated at the hearing that he wouldn't waive his right to challenge his deportation to the US. The site reported on the financial links between FTX and Bankman-Fried's trading firm, Alameda Research.
Bankman-Fried's mother, Barbara Fried, laughed when her son was called a "fugitive," according to a report. She chewed on the frames of her glasses.
Joseph Bankman tried to drown out the sound of the proceedings by putting his fingers in his ears.
The parents of Bankman- Fried gave him a hug after he was denied bail.
Fried and Bankman are in the Bahamas with their son and Fried is a professor at the law school.
According to the current CEO of FTX, John J. Ray III, Bankman- Fried's family received payments from the company.
Federal prosecutors in New York requested the arrest of the former FTX CEO. Notices of the criminal charges brought against him can be received if he is extradited.
Bankman- Fried was indicted Tuesday. There are counts of fraud and conspiracy included in the list.
At a press conference later in the day, prosecutors said that there were tens of millions of dollars in illegal campaign contributions to candidates in both major political parties.
Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said at the conference that the contributions were funded by stolen customer money.
He said that all of the dirty money was used for Bankman-Fried's desire to buy bipartisan influence in Washington.
