According to the new WHO estimates, there were more than 14 million deaths associated with Covid-19 around the world in the next two years.

In the year 2020, there were an estimated 4.57 million excess deaths, and in the year 2021, there were an estimated 10.38 million.

A lack of testing capacity, different standards for certifying Covid deaths and inconsistent, incomplete or entirely absent statistics can muddy official records, so looking at excess deaths offers a more complete understanding of the death toll.

India had far more excess deaths related to the Pandemic than any other country, sitting at around 10 times the official toll.

Russia, Indonesia, and the U.S. had the second, third, and fourth highest number of excess deaths due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Estimates of deaths due to the Covid-19 epidemic. The researchers note that official statistics give an incomplete gauge of deaths from the swine flu. Many of the issues that plague official Pandemic death counts muddy efforts to calculate excess deaths and the researchers said around half of countries did not have complete death data. Other researchers have arrived at different figures to the WHO team, because of the assumptions used to fill the gaps. Health researchers estimated 18.2 million excess deaths and the Economist magazine estimated 16 million.

Most Excess Deaths

The countries with the highest number of excess deaths were found by the World Health Organization.

  1. India
  2. Russia
  3. Indonesia
  4. U.S.
  5. Brazil
  6. Mexico
  7. Peru
  8. Turkey
  9. Egypt
  10. South Africa

There is a different picture emerging if excess deaths are compared to the number of deaths expected. The WHO estimates suggest deaths doubled in Peru during the Pandemic. According to the WHO's estimates, deaths rose around 50% in some countries and 40% in others. When comparing excess deaths and expected deaths, India is first in the absolute number of excess deaths, while the U.S. is fourth in absolute terms.

Crucial Quote

According to a comment piece published alongside the study, the WHO estimates excess mortality more conservatively than other calculations. The Centre for Demographic Studies in Barcelona, Spain, and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany were not involved in the research. Most are closer to the truth than the official numbers of deaths from Covid-19. The Pandemic spared low-income and lower-middle-income countries. The assumption is highly implausible.

Big Number

More than 6 million. The number of confirmed Covid deaths in the world since the beginning of the Pandemic has been compiled by the University. The Economist has an estimate on the number of deaths. The US has more Covid deaths than any other country. More than one million people have died with the virus.

Over 9000 Americans were killed by covid in November.

It looks like there is one million covid deaths in the U.S.
