ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti pays tribute to Grant Wahl (1:34)

The passing of a U.S. soccer journalist was a topic of discussion. There is a time and a place for it.

9:11 AM ET

According to an autopsy, Grant Wahl died of an arteriosclerosis in his heart while covering a World Cup match.

An autopsy was performed by the New York City Medical Examiner's Office.

She wrote about Grant's death on her husband's Substack newsletter.

The chest pressure he experienced may have been indicative of the initial symptoms. He wouldn't have been saved if there had been a lot of cardiopulmonary intervention. His death wasn't related to Covid. His death wasn't related to vaccine status. There wasn't anything sinister about his death.

During the extra time of Argentina's game against the Netherlands, the media tribune of the stadium was stricken with a heart attack by the 49-year-old man.

The emergency workers treated him for 20 to 30 minutes before taking him away on a stretcher.

He was taken to New York.

The transition was handled with care and sensitivity. It was an international matter that required coordination from multiple agencies domestically and internationally, and there was full cooperation from everyone involved. The White House, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Soccer and American Airlines are some of the people we would like to thank.

During the World Cup, he felt unwell.

My body began to break down. It is possible for three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work to do that to you. On the night of the USA-Netherlands game, I felt a new level of pressure and pain in my chest, as a result of what had been a cold over the previous 10 days.

He sought treatment for his symptoms after testing negative for carbon dioxide.

The medical clinic at the main media center said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and I'm already feeling better a few hours later. He wrote that there was still no bueno.

He was known for his coverage of soccer and college basketball.

He started a newsletter and a show with Meadowlark Media.

The analyst and editorial consultant for CBS Sports was previously employed by Fox Sports.

"The Beckham Experiment" was written in 2009, after English soccer star David Beckham joined Major League Soccer's LAGalaxy.

A memorial service is going to be held.
