A lawsuit against Facebook's parent company Meta was filed earlier today in the high court in the country.
The case claims that Meta has failed to employ enough safety measures on Facebook, which has in turn caused conflict that has led to the deaths of 500,000 people.
Abrham Meareg, whose father Professor Meareg Amare was killed during the Tigray war, is one of the people who have filed a petition on the subject.

The petition demands that Facebook stop and demotes hate speech, have enough content moderation in place, and create a fund to compensate victims.
Forced labor and human trafficking, unfair labor relations, union busting, and failure to provide adequate mental health and psychosocial support are just some of the issues Meta and Sama are currently facing.

The lawyer for the petition said that Big Tech needs to put respect for human rights at the forefront, design artificial intelligence in a way that puts people first, and resources that hub properly.
Africans have died from unsafe systems because of not investing adequately. We know that a better Facebook is possible, because they treat other markets differently. Facebook users in Africa need better. Africa deserves to be protected from the havoc caused by under investing in protection of human rights.
An investigation by Global Witness found that the social site was not good at detecting hate speech in the main language of Ethiopia.
Meta stated that Ethiopia was one of its highest priorities for country specific interventions to keep people safe.
