Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe are the only players in NHL history to score 800 goals.

He was the first to do it with a single team, and it came as part of a hat trick performance in a victory over the Hawks.

It's big. It's huge for hockey, it's huge for the organization, that's what Alex said in the locker room after the win. It is special to do it with you.

The oldest player in the history of the game scored in the third period. It was his 20th goal of the season and 18th in a row, giving him at least 20 in 18 straight seasons. Brendan and Howe are the only two who have done it in a row.

Tuesday's game was the 161st multi goal game of Ovi's career, which is second only to Gretzky's mark of189 games. In the opening period, he picked up two.

A special night is what it is. After the game, Ovi said he could feel the game and got two goals. I'm happy that it's over. We can concentrate on the next one now.

After the game, the Chicago players Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews consoled him at center ice, a testament to the significance of his accomplishment.

Washington coach Peter Laviolette praised the fans for taking a second to honor something. It was a hockey moment because they are hockey fans. It was not about a win or aloss. Hockey fans in Chicago noticed that someone did something good.

In the first period, Ovi broke a tie with Jaromir Jagr for the most game- opening goals in his career.

The first player to score 800 goals was Howe. He was alone for 14 years until he got his 800th. Next goal will tie him with Howe for second most in NHL history. The record for most goals by a man is held by Gretzky.

"I'm not thinking about what's going to happen out there, I'm just thinking about the next game, the next shift and not what's happening out there," he said. It doesn't matter how I help the team win.

After scoring four empty-net goals in three games, he reached 53 empty-net goals in his career. He has buried more than any other person.

Ovicheskin has made a habit of setting records. He has nine 50-goal seasons to his credit, and became the oldest player when he hit the 50 goal threshold in 2021, at 36 years old.

His nine Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophies are the most earned by any skater and he is the only one to have won a Stanley Cup.

In his NHL debut on October 5, 2005, Ovechkin scored two goals and was the first Russian to play in the league. He became the 23rd player to score 65 goals in a season while finishing with 112 points in the 2008 season.

After a slow start, the Caps have won five in a row. The Dallas Stars will be in town.

"As soon as it's over, we are happy, and we move on," he said.
