The Artemis I mission was the first test of NASA's new space launch system. The design and development of the service module was overseen by the ESA.

The previous record for the distance traveled from Earth to the moon was set in the Apollo era.

NASA engineers are checking the data from the capsule to see if the systems worked as they were supposed to.

Early signs are positive. The Artemis I mission manager said that Orion was back on Earth after returning from the moon. In the deep space environment, where it exceeded our expectations, we were able to demonstrate that we can return through Earth's atmosphere from lunar velocities.

If NASA concludes that everything worked as it was supposed to, the space agency can go ahead with plans for Artemis II, which will send a manned vehicle to the moon with astronauts on board.

The first woman and first person of color on the moon will be achieved with the Artemis III mission, which will mark the first moon landing since 1972, and will take place as early as 2024.
