According to a new report from GLAAD and Media Matters, there has been an increase in the number of hate crimes against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer community on social media. This data coincides with controversial content moderation decisions Musk has taken as the head of Twitter, like dissolving its Trust and Safety Council and reinstating accounts like James Lindsay, Jordan Peterson and the Babylon Bee, which were previously banned for violatingTwitter's rules on hate speech.
Nine popular right-wing accounts were looked at to see their use of the anti-gay slur. The accounts saw a 1200% increase in the number of times they used the slur. In July, before Musk took ownership of the social media platform, the term "groomer" was considered a violation of the policy on hate speech.
The term "groomer" is used to refer to adults who attempt to form relationships with children in order to sexually abuse them, but it is also used to make false accusations against the LGBTQ community.
The governor passed the "Don't Say Gay" bill in March, which banned kindergarten through third grade teachers from teaching about gender identity or sexual orientation, as well as teachers in all grades from addressing topics that might not be appropriate. Critics pointed out that the vague language of the bill could cause confusion among school districts. The law went into effect in July and some teachers said that they were not allowed to have a photo on their desk with their family if they were in a same-sex relationship. The Stop the Sexualization of Children Act was introduced by House Republicans.

Musk met with representatives from several civil rights groups to discuss the future of the platform. According to statements from leaders who attended the meeting, Musk said he wouldn't restore banned users until there was a transparent process for doing so. Representatives from groups that suffer from hate violence will be included in Musk's council.
The process for reinstating banned accounts is still shrouded in mystery. He used to justify reinstating former President Donald Trump's account when he ran impromptu, day-longTwitter polls. Musk said he would offer "amnesiac" to suspended account holders if they didn't break the law or engage in egregiousspam.
Representatives from marginalized groups are not currently included in the proposed content moderation council.
Musk is involved in anti-LGBTQ dialogue on the social networking site. He made fun of both trans people and one of the nation's most well known public health officials in just five words. As of November 23, Twitter no longer enforces a policy to reduce the spread of misinformation about COVID-19. He promoted vaccine skepticism and misinformation throughout the year.

Musk said that he disagreed. It is not good or kind to ostracize those who don't use your pronouns.
Direct harm has been done to the former Trust and Safety head of the company by Musk. After Musk took over, an openly gay Jewish man stuck it out at the social networking site for a while.
As Musk works with former New York Times columnist Bari Weiss and former Rolling Stone editor Matt Taibbi to post a series of so-far-underwhelming exposes called "TheTwitter Files," he has gone digging into Roth's academic research. Musk posted out-of-context snippets from the paper in an attempt to make a point about child sexualization and the same anti-gay rhetoric that has come to be associated with him.
