According to multiple reports, Sam Bankman- Fried appeared at a hearing in the Bahamas with his parents in attendance.
The former FTX CEO indicated at the hearing that he wouldn't waive his right to challenge his deportation to the US. In early November, the site broke the news of the financial links between FTX and Bankman- Fried's trading firm.
According to the report, Bankman- Fried's mother laughed when her son was called a "fugitive." The Times reported that she chewed on the frames of her glasses.
Joseph Bankman sometimes put his fingers in his ears to drown out the noise of the proceedings.
The parents of Bankman- Fried gave him a hug after he was denied bail.
Fried and Bankman are in the Bahamas with their son and Fried is a professor at the law school.
According to the current CEO of FTX, John J Ray III, Bankman-Fried's family received payments from FTX.
Federal prosecutors in New York requested the arrest of the former FTX CEO. Notices of the criminal charges brought against him can be received if he is extradited.
The indictment against Bankman-Fried was made public on Tuesday.
At a press conference later in the day, prosecutors said that there were tens of millions of dollars in illegal campaign contributions to candidates in both major political parties.
The US Attorney for the Southern District of New York said at the conference that the contributions were funded by stolen customer money.
He said that all of the dirty money was used for Bankman-Fried's desire to buy bipartisan influence in Washington.
