Sam Bankman- Fried went to Washington to testify in front of Congress and to meet officials at the White House.
The fate of the disgraced executive was in the hands of a judge in Nassau, the country's capital. After being arrested the night before, Mr. Bankman- Fried wore a white shirt and blue suit to court.
The judge denied bail at the end of the three-hour hearing. Mr. Bankman-Fried had to remain in jail because of his access to financial resources, according to the chief magistrate.
The parents of Mr. Bankman-Fried were allowed to give him a hug after the courtroom was cleared.
Police escort Mr. Bankman- Fried to the courthouse. His parents were seated in the back of the courtroom.
The focus was on whether Mr. Bankman- Fried would be released on bail.
Mr. Bankman-Fried should be held in custody because he was a flight risk and had enough money to make an escape. Jerone Roberts is a lawyer for Mr. Bankman- Fried. Mr. Roberts said that this is not a vacation house.
Mr. Roberts said that Mr. Bankman-Fried had decided to stay in the Bahamas to fix things despite his company collapsing. Ms. Fried chewed on the frames of her glasses as the prosecutor argued that Mr. Bankman- Fried might leave the country.
Mr. Roberts told the judge that Mr. Bankman- Fried was willing to submit to curfew and electronic monitoring. He said that Mr. Bankman- Fried takes medication for depression and attention deficit disorder.
After Ms. Ferguson-Pratt rejected the bail request, Mr. Bankman- Fried rested his head on his parents shoulders.
He was turned over to the Department of Correction. The hearing is in February.
