Ryan Walters, who oversaw the nation's top defense for much of the season, has been named the next head coach of the Boilermakers.
The nation's top assistant coach is the winner of the Broyles Award. Jeff Brohm left to become the head coach at Louisville. The Illinois defense was first in fewest points allowed and second in fewest yards allowed in the regular season.
He got a five-year contract from the school.
"From the beginning of the search process, coach Walters stood out because of the energy, passion and intelligence he displayed as a defensive coach in both the Big Ten Conference and the SEC," Bobinski said. His ability to connect with his student-athletes as both a coach and mentor is one of the reasons why he has risen so quickly in the coaching profession. We look forward to the culture and atmosphere of success he and his staff will instill in and around our football program and we see him as a perfect fit for our university and this community.
"I am very proud to be the head football coach at the University of Purdue," he said. I would like to thank Director of athletics Mike Bobinski and PresidentMitch Daniels. Our football program will follow in the footsteps of the excellence shown across our campus. We are excited to join the communities of West Lafayette and Purdue. It's the boiler up!
He was a candidate for the head-coaching position at Colorado, his alma mater. A safety and team captain who started 33 games for the Buffaloes, Walters began his coaching career at Colorado and went on to work at Arizona, Oklahoma, North Texas, Memphis and Missouri.
He's the third black coach to be hired this season, joining Western Michigan's Lance Taylor and Kentucky's Darrell Hazell. It's the first time since the 1980s that a coach from the Boilermakers has a mostly defensive background.
Oregon's Dan Lanning is the youngest football coach in the country at 36 years old.
Jeff's brother Brian will be the interim coach for the bowl game.
