For the better part of a year, Jacob had been waking up with a variety of strange illnesses. Each morning for the first three months he vomited. He told Insider that he had an allergy to hot water that made him feel like he had been stung by a bee. It felt like he had hair all over his face when he tried to sleep.
Jacob came to a realization after stumbling upon PSA TikToks. He said he found everything in his room when he shined his flashlight.
The sicknesses that he told Insider had stumped his doctor were caused by living in a room covered in fiberglass powder, he thought. He told Insider that the mattress he bought on Amazon was the source.
As a cost-effective flame retardant, fiberglass is used in mattresses and memory foam mattresses. According to Eric Rodriguez, the CEO of Innerbody Research, fiberglass shouldn't be an issue if you're exposed to it.
"Fiberglass inside a mattress is fine if it stays in, but if it gets out, it can wreak havoc on your house and your health," he said. The tiny fibers can get all over anything if the mattress cover is worn out. It can end up in a home's heating and air conditioning system once it's out.
Jacob thought it would be fine to remove the zip off mattress cover since it had a fiberglass warning on it. Jacob told Insider of the material, which he initially didn't know was fiberglass, that the second you open it, it just goes everywhere. It is spread like fine dust.
Jacob, who recently left a music teaching job to become a full-time influencer, posted about his discovery to his 352,900 followers on TikTok.
Jacob told Insider that he can ask for things because of his large audience. I did not expect this, but I was willing to try.
He said in the December 10 TikTok that everything in his bedroom and insides are covered in fiberglass.
Jacob said he would be happy to do whatever the mattress company wanted. I don't want to sleep on fiberglass so I won't be asking for a paycheck.
According to Jacob, nine mattresses are on their way to his house. He wants to replace his mattress with a new one and give the rest to shelters in Cape Cod.
