A college football coach has died. The head coach of Mississippi State passed away on Monday night, one day after he was rushed to a hospital due to a health issue. His death was caused by a heart condition. There was no further announcement. He died at the age of 61. The family of Mike said he was a father and grandfather. He was able to donate his organs as part of his charity work. A lot of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, and football fans around the world are supporting us. We would like to thank you for sharing the joy of our beloved husband and father's lives. When he became the head coach at Texas Tech in 2000, he became the first D1 head coach in the world. The "Air Raid" is a pass-heavy offense that many college coaches run today. After 10 seasons at Texas Tech, where he compiled an 84-43 record, he left for Washington State. After eight seasons there, he moved to Mississippi State. His dry sense of humor and quirky responses at media events made him famous. Mississippi State University president Mark E. Keenum mourned the loss on Tuesday. It is with great sadness that we learn of his passing. Mike had a wide-open approach to pursuing excellence in all things. He won eight bowl games in his 21 years as a head coach. It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye.
