We knew that United Airlines was going to place a wide body aircraft order today, and we now have all the information. We were expecting more from the announcement than we got.
Up to 200 Boeing 787s will be ordered by United, with 100 firm orders and 100 options. The largest wide body aircraft order by a US airline is this one. The planes are expected to be delivered by 2032. The -8, -9, and/or 10 could be included if United picks up the -8, -9, and/or 10 variant.
The new aircraft will be used to replace older aircraft in the fleet. The 767 will be removed from United's fleet by the year 2030.
Boeing won out over the A350 when United was trying to choose between the two. United has an all Boeing fleet. The 757s are an average of 24 years old, the 776s are 18 years old, and the 797s are five years old.
Prior to this new order, United only had a few remaining in its order book.
Up to 100 Boeing MAXs have been ordered by United. From a previous order, the airline has exercised 44 options and placed a new order for 56 more. Between 2024 and 2026, 44 of those planes will join United's fleet, while 56 of them will join United's fleet over the course of the next decade.
United has two Boeing planes in its fleet. The plane that the airline has on order is not yet certified.
When you combine all of United's outstanding aircraft orders, the airline plans to take delivery of 700 new aircraft by the end of 2032.
It is expected that the entire narrow body fleet will have personal televisions and other cool features by the end of the century, as United is updating all of its narrow body interiors with personal televisions and other cool features.
United Airlines has ordered a lot of Boeing products. Up to 200 Boeing 787s (100 firm orders and 100 option), plus up to 100 Boeing MAXs (44 were previous options, 56 are part of a new order), are included. There is nothing too surprising here. We knew something had to be ordered because United was near the end of its order book.
