Texas suspends Chris Beard after arrest for domestic violence (1:15)

Following the arrest and suspension of Texas' basketball coach Chris Beard, Jay Bilas gives an idea of how the program will move forward. There is a break between 1:45 and 1:45.

Texas men's basketball coach Chris Beard, who was hired away by the Longhorns with expectations he'd elevate his alma mater to the same elite level, was arrested on a felony family violence charge.

Beard wasn't paid until further notice. The Longhorns needed overtime to defeat Rice on Monday night.

Beard was taken into custody by Austin police and booked into the county jail. On Monday, they were charged with assault on a family or household member in which their breath was interfered with. The charge is a third degree felony in Texas and could lead to up to 10 years in prison.

The woman told police that she and the man have been together for six years. He became violent after she broke his glasses, she said.

According to the affidavit, the woman told police that she had been attacked by him and that he had thrown her around and gone crazy.

She said Beard put his arm around her neck and she couldn't breathe for a while. She had a bite mark on her arm, as well as an injury to her temple, according to police.

Beard told police that he had audio recordings of the incident that showed he wasn't the primary aggressor. Police said he wouldn't share them with them.

Beard had his hands cuffed in front of him while he was before a judge for his bond hearing. Beard was told he could communicate with the woman but not in a threatening manner and was told he was not allowed to possess a gun.

When addressing the judge, Beard nodded his head and said "yes, sir." Beard was in jail and posted a bond. When he got out of the jail, he didn't answer questions.

Minton told the American-Statesman the coach is not guilty.

Minton said that he should not have been arrested. He should be immediately released and all charges dropped. It's impossible.

It's not known if the woman has an attorney. The Associated Press doesn't usually identify alleged victims of extreme violence without their consent.

Beard's suspension was announced by the school, which said it takes matters of violence in the community seriously.

Terry was a head coach at two schools. He said after the win against Rice that he had not spoken to Texas officials about his future as acting head coach. One of the most difficult days of his long coaching career was when the Longhorns played Rice.

Terry said that the staff has done a great job of preparing the players for the game. Today was about controlling what we could. I think our guys did a good job of showing a lot of resilience and perseverance.

They have earned a day off to try to regroup and get their minds and bodies back to normal. We will allow them to get away a bit on Tuesday.

Terry didn't talk to Beard after he got out of jail. Terry didn't read the police affidavit detailing the allegations against the coach.

He said he was trying to rally the men. We were going to have to play for 40 minutes. It was going to be a challenge for us.

At Texas, Beard is in his second season of a seven-year guaranteed contract that pays him more than $5 million a year. A provision in his contract allows the administration to fire him for cause for conduct that reflects poorly on the program, school or university system. Being charged with a felony is also included.

The chairman of the regents of the University of Texas did not return a message.

Morris was arrested in June after an altercation with a former girlfriend. There is a court hearing in the area.

Morris is a top national recruit and has been allowed to play this season despite the charge. Moore has said that Morris is not guilty of the assault charge.

The AP and Myron Medcalf contributed to the report.
