The Bucs came back from a 16-3 deficit to win the season series against their rivals.
In a reversal from last week, when the Cleveland Browns trailed the entire game and came back to win in overtime, the Bucs scored two late touchdown to defeat the Saints.
Quarterback Tom Brady connected with a tight end for a 1-yard touchdown to cut the Saints' lead to 16-10), and then on the next possession he threw two passes to a group of players, including a 10-yard run from Leonard Fournette.
Brady connected with White for the game-winning touchdown after a holding call on Smith wiped out a touchdown by Godwin. It was Brady's 44th fourth-quarter comeback, breaking the record for most by a quarterback.
Brady struggled with both the deep ball and the screen game without the All- Pro right tackle. Demario Davis dropped into coverage and he was picked off on a pass intended for Russell Gage that led to a field goal. Brady failed to account for a LB in coverage for the second time this season. Brady led the two scoring drives and the victory was never in doubt.
If they can even get to the red zone, it's a troubling trend. Mike Evans, the team's leading receiver, didn't see his number called until 8:26 to go in the first half even though he had just two catches. White fumbled the ball at the beginning of the second half and Brady and Evans couldn't make a play.
Each week the goal of the defense is to hold their opponent to 17 points or less. The offense's inability to put points on the board has made for unrealistic expectations. Brady was able to save the game for a defense that was without several key players in its secondary.
Brady has had at least one turnover in all six regular-season games against the Saints since joining the Bolts in 2020. He doesn't have many against any other team.
The next game is at the 49ers. It's Sunday.
The Saints lost their season in 3 minutes.
The Saints were in control for most of the night in a game that could have put them in the running for the division title. A pass interference penalty on Adebo put the ball at the Saints' 1-yard line.
The way for the late comeback was due to the fact that the Saints offense failed to respond to the first score. The quarterback was sacked for a loss of 10 yards on second-and-7 with 2:54 left, and then a pass to Hill for a first down was dropped on third-and-18.
The Saints' hopes for a winning record in Dennis Allen's first season in the role were dashed when the Bucs drove down the field and scored. The Saints have taken a number of tough losses this season and have often lamented their own mistakes.
It likely dealt the final blow to their attempt to save the season.
Allen said that the game was tough because they really had an opportunity to win it. It's hard to explain. It doesn't feel good.
After the Saints failed to respond at the end of the game, the string of prime-time road losses will continue for the quarterback. On the team's final offensive drive, Hill dropped a deep ball that would have been a first down, and that was one of the reasons why the team lost. The Saints kicked too many field goals and couldn't get into the end zone, even though they didn't make any major mistakes.
Thanks to his blazing speed and return potential, Rashid Shaheed has been getting more chances in the offense. Shaheed showed on a national stage that he should be a part of the offense every week. Shaheed returned a punt for 41 yards and finished with a career-high four catches for 71 yards. He has been a bright spot for the team.
Heading into Monday, the Saints were one of the worst teams in the league in turnover differential, with only two picks from the defense. Brady changed that. Brady has been a target for picks against the defense since joining the team in 2020. New Orleans picked him off for the ninth time in his career, and also forced a fumbled ball. It feels like too little, too late to save their season, even though it could be a sign their luck is changing.
Hill's 30-yard receiving touchdown was the first score of his career against the Buccaneers. He has not scored a touchdown in any of the other games.
The next game is against the Falcons. There is an event happening on December 18th.
