Why Riddick wouldn't see Mayfield as an upgrade for the 49ers (1:15)

The idea of plugging Baker Mayfield into the 49ers offense was broken down by Louis Riddick. There is a break between 1:45 and 1:45.

The 49ers spent the next 24 hours sifting through both the short and long-term ramifications of Jimmy Garoppolo's injury.

On Monday afternoon, that meant doing everything from determining whether to pursue released signal-caller Baker Mayfield on the Waiver wire to assessing how Garoppolo's loss affects their Super Bowl hopes.

Shortly after Garoppolo's broken foot, many 49ers watchers were interested in the release of Baker Mayfield from the Carolina Panther. If the Niners wanted to acquire him, he would have to either fall to their spot in the waiver wire or clear waivers.

The coach said that the quarterback probably wouldn't be in the Niners' future at the moment.

It would surprise me that we look into everything. We need to talk more this afternoon. I've always been a fan of his, but I think our players are great. We'll look into everything, but I'm pretty sure we're at our current location.

The Niners agreed to terms with Josh Johnson on Sunday night, just hours after Brock Purdy took the reins. Johnson has been with the Niners before, most recently in 2020, and that experience and knowledge of the offense made a reunion appealing.

"Just having him here in 2020 for that last month of the year, we got to see a lot of him just as a player, which we liked the player but more importantly we really liked the guy." We feel lucky to have him here.

The team has not heard from any retired veterans who would be interested in joining the Niners.

"I'm still waiting on Joe Montana to call," he joked. I'm prepared for Steve. I believe he could still run it.

Garoppolo and the Niners are still unsure of the extent of his broken foot and how long he will be out of action. There hasn't been an official diagnosis yet, so there hasn't been an alleviated fear of a Lisfranc injury.

They're still trying to work through that. It seems like they are starting to believe that it's not. That is positive news. It isn't all done yet. We don't want to give you false information because the specialists are talking about it.

Garoppolo joined his teammates for meetings Monday after spending the night with his family. It was good to have Garoppolo around the team so everyone could give him a hug and wish him well, according to the coach. Garoppolo was in good spirits and optimistic about making a full recovery from his injury.

The Niners will turn their attention to preparing Purdy for the game against the Bucs. Despite the loss of Garoppolo, the 49ers still believe they can make it to the Super Bowl and were happy with how Purdy played in the 33-17 win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

"I think we've got a really good team who has worked their butt off to get to this point," he said. "We've got a lot more football left and I know it's a big loss starting with TreyLance and then the loss of Jimmy last night." I think our team is built for this, even though it is a big deal.
