Americans across the country were wiping their groceries down with wipes to protect them from Covid-19. We now know that it might not have been pointless.

According to a new study conducted by the Food Standards Agency in the U.K., Covid-19 can live on the surface of certain groceries for a week.

The researchers put the Covid on produce and packaging to see how long it would last.

If someone sneezed or coughed near the items, the amount of virus placed on them was decided.

The five products that Covid-19 was able to live on were tested at different temperatures and humidity levels.

  1. Broccoli: Up to five days 
  2. Cheese: Several days to a week
  3. Chilled meat: Several days to a week
  4. Plastic surfaces, including plastic bottles: Three days to a week
  5. Refrigerated fresh peppers: Up to a week

Within the first 24 hours, the levels of the virus dropped on the surfaces of apples, pastries, and aluminum cans.

People shouldn't go back to how things were in 2020.

Experts recommend washing fresh produce and cleaning your hands before eating food.

The public may be interested in the finding that a virus may persist in an infectious state on food and packaging surfaces.
