Cashman has been the GM of the Yankees for 26 years and has been with the organization for 38 years.
Cashman's future with the Yankees was thrown into question after New York was eliminated from the playoffs by Boston in the American League Wild Card game.
In Cashman's first 24 seasons as GM, the Yankees had qualified for the playoffs five times and 20 times, but failed to win a World Series.
With plenty of pressure on the Yankees to contend, they got off to a hot start and were on the verge of breaking the all-time MLB single-season wins record. After the All-Star break, injuries began to mount, and the Yankees lost their lead in the American League East.
The Yankees won the American League East. The Houston Astros swept them in the American League Championship Series despite beating them in the American League Division Series.
Cashman's elevation to GM was caused by the resignation of Bob Watson, who was part of the team that won the World Series in 1996.
