The Real ID card deadline has been moved from May 3rd, 2023 to May 7th, 2025. After the deadline, people won't be allowed to fly unless they have an updated driver's license.

According to a Monday press release from the Department of Homeland Security, the extension is meant to address the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the ability to obtain a REAL ID driver's license. The standard was put in place to improve security while flying, so getting one of the cards requires a lot of documentation. Proof of your legal name, birth date, social security number, and home address are included.

There was a Real ID delay. The act mandating them was passed in 2005 and the cutoff date is early 2008. Since some state officials were against the change, that was a bit optimistic, but it was necessary to work with dozens of state and territorial governments to make the change. Everyone over the age of 18 needs to upgrade their IDs.

Many of the previous delays were due to states not being ready. All but one of the American territories is in compliance with the law.
