On the first day of the Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings, a source told Jeff Passan that the PhiladelphiaPhillies had agreed to terms on a massive contract with free-agent infielder Trea Turner. A source told Kiley that Turner had an 11-year contract.
The Philadelphia Phillies have been rumored to be a suitor for Turner for a long time, at least in part, due to the fact that he has a relationship with one of his former teammates. The opening was created when the Phillies declined their option on second baseman Jean Segura.
With Turner on board, Bryson Stott, who showed a lot of promise as a rookies, will most likely shift to second baseman. They'll exceed the luxury-tax threshold for a second year in a row, thanks to Turner, J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos. There is a chance thatHarper won't return until the All-Star break.
Turner has accumulated 99 home runs and 149 stolen bases over the course of his career. A two-time All-Star, Turner had a career year with the Dodgers, batting.302/.343/.465 with 21 home runs, 100 runs and 27 stolen bases. He was an average defensive shortstop.
Turner's signing leaves Carlos Correa and Dansby Swanson as the available infielders in a historically star-laden free agent crop. If the market falls on prominent free agents, the Dodgers are always in the market for short-term contracts.
