DJ Uiagalelei entered the transfer portal on Monday, after a topsy-turvy season in which he was benched by his coach.
Uiagalelei, a junior, finished his final season with 2,521 passing yards and 22 touchdown to go with seven interception, as the Tigers went 11-2
Uiagalelei said that he wouldn't trade his time here for anything. I am grateful to the staff, trainers and my coaches for believing in me and pushing me to be the best I can be both on and off the field.
I decided to enter the transfer portal after careful thought.
During the opening week of the season, there was a lot of talk about who would replace Uiagalelei.
After the outcome was decided, Klubnik played in that win.
In his news conferences, the future of the quarterback position became a topic. The coach supported Uiagalelei as the season went on.
Despite struggling in a loss to South Carolina, Uiagalelei was going to start against North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.
The loss from Uiagalelei was blamed on turnovers and drops from the receiver by the coach.
During the win over the Tar Heels, things changed when Klubnik came off the bench and lifted the tigers to a 39-10 victory. They have won seven conference titles in the last eight years.
Uiagalelei went 2 of 5 for 10 yards in the first two drives. He had two drives end in three-and-outs. After coming in, he led a scoring drive and played the rest of the game, going 20 of 24 for 309 total yards and two total touchdown.
The plan going into the game was for Klubnik to come in on the third series. There was no turning back once the ball was moved.
The Capital One Orange Bowl will be played on December 30th.
"Things have to happen the way they're supposed to happen, and tonight, that's the way it went, and Cade was ready," said the coach after the victory. You have a chance to watch what he can do. Guys were making plays for him. He is fast. He can play with his legs. It was great to see our future and what it will look like at the school.
