Travelers will need to wait a bit longer to see Newark's new terminal.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said on Monday that it was postponing the opening of the new facility.
The terminal, which was scheduled to open in December, will now open in early 2019. The facility's fire alarm and security systems were the cause of the delay.
The airline partners of the Port Authority decided not to open a new facility just days before one of the busiest holiday travel seasons on record.
The opening will be moved to early January of next year.
While we had targeted the start of passenger operations at Newark's new Terminal A for December 8th, the fire alarm and security systems have not passed their final tests. The issues are expected to be resolved soon. The new Terminal A will be open to the public in early January in response to the concerns of airlines.
The airport has been considered one of the worst in the country for a long time, and the new terminal is going to change that. Newark's Terminal A will close in conjunction with the opening of the new facility in order to make way for the biggest passenger-facing upgrade yet.
Travelers passing through the airport in the coming weeks may be excited to check out the new facility, but the roughly month-long delay shouldn't have much, if any, impact on operations.
Air Canada, American Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines will operate from the new Terminal A.
