A view of Earth rising over the moon from the Orion capsule

The moon is seen as a crescent in this picture.

The space agency NASA.

The spaceship, which was launched atop the SLS rocket, is heading home. The capsule hurtled around the moon's far side and lit up its engines to begin its journey back to Earth.

We don't see the far side of the moon from Earth because of the length of the moon's rotation. It took pictures of the crescent planet rising above the moon as it passed back into view.

The ocean off the coast of California will be where Orion will splash down on 11 December if everything goes according to plan. One of the most challenging parts of the mission will be the plunge of the heat shield into the atmosphere. The main goal of this test flight is to make sure the heat shield holds up.

The next step will be the Artemis II mission in which a capsule will carry astronauts to the moon and back. For the first time in 45 years, astronauts will return to the moon in a capsule. The Artemis III mission will mark the beginning of a sustained human presence on the moon.
