The REAL ID rules will be delayed until May 25th, according to the DHS.

The date for the new identification cards to be required for entry into federal buildings has been moved back by two years.

In 2005, congress passed legislation requiring Americans to get the new REAL ID cards, but it took years for departments to coordinate a plan, and previous enforcement starts have been pushed back.

The Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said that the Department of Homeland Security continues to work with U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories to meet REAL ID requirements. The extension will give states time to make sure their residents have REAL ID compliant licenses.

Innovations will be implemented to make the process more efficient and accessible. Ensuring that the American public can travel safely is a priority for us.

Every American traveler 18 years of age and older must provide a state-issued, enhanced driver's license or identification card or another TSA-acceptable form of identification if they want to board a plane or ship.

All 50 states and the District of Columbia are compliant with security standards and are issuing REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses and identification cards.

It is important that you request a REAL ID from your state's Department of Motor Vehicles, since the states are still allowed to issue driver's licenses and ID cards that aren't REAL ID documents.
