Croatia advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Japan in a penalty shoot out thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Livakovic.

Livakovic kept out the first two attempts before Mario Pasalic converted the crucial effort to take his side through.

Brazil or South Korea will be the opponents for Zlatko Dalic's side in the next round.

Two minutes before the half-time break, Daizen Maeda scored from Yoshida's knock down to give Japan the lead.

Ivan Perisic became Croatia's all-time leading scorer at major tournaments with 10 goals after his brilliant bullet head from Dejan Lovren's cross gave Croatia a second half lead.

The game went into the extra 30 minutes with neither side able to score.

Lovro Majer dragged a shot in the 120th minute after Shuichi Gonda had made a great save.

Livakovic emerged as the leader of Croatia's celebrations after the contest went to penalty kicks.
