If the platform suspects a user is under the age of 18 it will prompt users on Facebook Dating to verify they are over the age of 18. Users can confirm their age by either uploading a selfies or submitting a copy of their ID. A company called Yoti uses facial features to estimate a user's age.
New age verification systems will help stop children from using features meant for adults, according to Meta. There is no requirement for adults to verify their age on Facebook Dating.
Yoti has been used by Meta for other age verification purposes. According to Yoti, its system is very accurate, with a rate of 99.65 percent for 13 to 17 year olds. According to Meta, age verification has sorted hundreds of thousands of people into age-appropriate versions of the app and that 81 percent of users choose to use Yoti's selfies option.
Yoti shows that the accuracy of the system is worse for women and people with dark complexions. Concerns have been raised over how facial recognitions and analysis software perform for different groups.
