College football's new transfer portal windows, explained (1:43)

The transfer portal windows are new. It was 1:44.

The college football transfer portal window officially opened on Monday, and while some players announced their plans to leave their schools prior to that, things are really off and running now.

The portal was open all year long last year. The quarterbacks who made an immediate impact at their new schools were Spencer Rattler of South Carolina and Bo Nix of Oregon.

The NCAA adopted dates for when players can enter the portal and not lose a year of eligibility, as well as when they can sign with their new school. The first window is open for 45 days in December and January. For graduate transfers, there are exceptions.

The college football transfer cycle was very busy a year ago. Notable players entering and exiting the portal are tracked with the latest news on how the season could be changed. There are moves at the top.

MONDAY, DEC. 5

Huge UTEP offensive lineman is in

Jeremiah Byers is a multiyear starter and should draw attention.

Vanderbilt quarterback enters portal

Vandy starter Mike Wright passed for 974 yards with 12 touchdown and four pick ups. The Commodores failed to win a game in the SEC.

Virginia Tech's top receiver enters

Smith had 37 catches for 668 yards with three touchdown and an 18.2 yard average. He is currently a graduate student.

Sources: Pitt QB Slovis on move again

Sources tell Pete that Kedon would like to enter the portal.

He completed 58.4% of his passes for 2,397 yards, with 10 touchdown and nine pick ups. One year of eligibility remains for him.

Three-year starting guard at Purdue is in

Spencer began his career at the Boilermakers as a junior. Two years of eligibility remain for him.

One of UCF's top tacklers in portal

The second baseman on the Knights had 52 tackles this season. Also had five tackles for loss.

North Carolina linebacker enters

In seven games for the Heels this season, she recorded 14 tackles.

Virginia cornerback in portal

Fentrell Cypress II has started 14 games over the past two seasons. Over the past two seasons, he made 46 tackles.

Wake Forest running back in portal

Christian Turner had a season in which he ran for 509 yards and 12 total touchdown. He moved from Michigan to another state.

Productive Washington State wideouts in portal

Washington State has two of its best players in the portal. Over the past two seasons, De'Zhaun has caught 95 passes for 1,073 yards and 10 touchdown. The sophomore had 43 catches for 491 yards and 3 scores this season.

Kent State offensive tackle in portal

The 6-foot-8 tackle started every game for the Golden Flashes. Four pressures were allowed at the right tackle.

Source: NC State quarterback Devin Leary intends to enter portal

One year of eligibility remains at his new school, as he's been at NC State for five years. Over the past four years, he has produced 6,807 and 62 touchdown, making him one of the most productive portal quarterbacks. He tore hispec against Florida State in October, cutting his season short.

According to a source, Leary is expected to be cleared to throw by the beginning of March. He might be ready for spring football at his new place of employment.

Ball State running back entering portal

Steele had 1,556 rushing yards and 15 total touchdown In his freshman year, he had 891 rushing yards and seven scores.

Ball State is ineligible for a bowl game.

Five Miami players enter portal

The players are in the transfer portal.

Franklin had five rushing touchdown this year. Roberts made 9 tackles.

SUNDAY, DEC. 4

Wisconsin's three-year starting QB to enter portal

In his four-year career at the University of Wisconsin, Graham Mertz has started 32 games and thrown for over 5,000 yards and 38 touchdown.

Mertz, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, went 19-13 as Wisconsin's starter, but the Badgers went from 9-4 in 2021. Fickell was hired on the 27th.

Mertz's air yards per attempt ranked third in the conference and 21st in the country, while his Total QBR ranked ninth among 12 qualified Big Ten quarterbacks.

Indiana freshman LB to enter portal

In his freshman year, Dasan McCullough recorded 49 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.

He started four of the Hoosiers' 12 games and had 15 defensive pressures. He is the son of a football coach.

Alabama starting OL to enter portal

Cohen, a junior who will have two more years of eligibility, opened up about mental health awareness in July, saying, "I want to shed light on the good that has come."

Vanderbilt's leading rusher to enter portal

Fourth-year senior Ray Davis ran for 1,042 yards and his five rushing touchdown were tied for the team lead.

Davis spent his first two seasons at Temple before moving to Commodores for the 2020 season. He has 2,497 rushing yards, 437 receiving yards and 20 total touchdown in his career.

Arizona's leading tackler to enter portal

Turner made 78 total tackles, two intercepts, two forced turnovers and one sack for the Cats.

Turner has racked up 159 tackles and defended seven passes in his career.

Former Clemson starting DB to enter portal

Cornerback Fred Davis II started the first four games of the year and appeared in seven games, totaling 15 tackles and defending two passes, before he injured his ankle.

Davis has recorded 34 total tackles and four passes defensed in three seasons at the school.

UCF QB to enter portal

In 15 career games with the Knights, the quarterback has thrown for 2,377 yards, 23 touchdown passes and seven pick ups. He was a starter last year and played behind John Rhys Plumlee for the majority of the season.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound quarterback with three years of eligibility remaining, completed 72.3% of his passes this season.

Charlotte's leading WR to enter portal

According to Pete Thamel, Charlotte wideout Elijah Spencer will enter the transfer portal.

He was named Conference USA's freshman of the year after his 381-yard, six-touchdown season.

SATURDAY, DEC. 3

Oklahoma backup QB to enter portal

Nick Evers was one of the top recruits in the class. He switched from Florida to Oklahoma at the last moment.

Evers was the backup to Gabriel this season. Jackson Arnold is a five star quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners.

BYU OL to enter portal

Campbell will enter the portal when it opens.

The younger Barrington played at right tackle and was part of the All-America team. In eight games in 2021, he played 468 total snaps, but in nine games without a start, he played 112 total snaps.

Oklahoma State's leading tackler to enter portal

Two years of eligibility remain for Mason Cobb, who was the leader of the Cowboys with 96 tackles. He recorded 2 sacks and also forced a fumbled ball.

Leading MAC rusher to enter portal

Steele ranked sixth in the country with 1,556 yards. He scored 14 times and had nine 100 yard games.

He scored 20 touchdown in two seasons.

FRIDAY, DEC. 2

Texas A&M QB, cornerback entering the portal

King was the 46th ranked recruit in the nation when he signed with Texas A&M.

King played in only one game this season.

Denver Harris is also currently in the portal. An indefinite suspension ended the season of the former 5-star recruit. There are three years left of eligibility for him.

Three Stanford players entering portal

They put their names in the transfer portal. In recent years, he was a top recruit for the school. He was one of the top recruits in 2020.

Nugent was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention by the coaches in 2021. He played in 22 games over the past two years. Damuni was a leader on the team.

Shaw stepped down this week.

Oklahoma receiver enters the portal

Theo Wease Jr. entered the transfer portal after playing for the Sooners. Over the course of three seasons at Oklahoma, the former 4-star recruit had 10 touchdown catches. Venables' first year as head coach was a success.

Washington State linebacker in portal

Brown is in the transfer portal.

Western Michigan defensive lineman in portal

He is a graduate transfer. Fiske had 30 tackles and 4.5 sacks. The coach was let go in November.

Fiske, who has 12 career sacks, is expected to get a lot of attention.

Top Mississippi State receiver to enter portal

The transfer portal will be entered by Rara Thomas with two years of eligibility left. After catching 18 passes and five touchdown as a freshman, Thomas saw his production explode.

He was the leader in receiving yards for Mississippi State as a sophomore. He had seven touchdown catches and was fourth on the team in reception.

Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne intends to enter transfer portal

Pyne will have three years of eligibility at his next place of employment. He started 10 games for Notre Dame this season and led the team to an 8-2 record. He passed the majority of his passes.

The most wins against top 25 teams at Notre Dame in the last decade was by him.

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec to enter portal

The graduate transfer will have one season left in eligibility. After transferring from Notre Dame, he has been the starting quarterback for Boston College. He'll be one of the more experienced quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal, as he has been productive when healthy. He started 24 games in three years at Boston College.

He hasn't played since being knocked out of the game. He had some injuries that are expected to heal soon. Sources say that he would be available for spring practice wherever he moved.

THURSDAY, DEC. 1

Iowa lands former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara

According to sources, McNamara is going to transfer to Iowa, where he'll be able to play football.

The graduate entered the transfer portal as a graduate on Monday. He suffered a leg injury in the third week of the season that required surgery.

McNamara threw for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdown in 14 games as Michigan won its first Big Ten title in a decade and made its firstCFP appearance. He was the starting quarterback for the UM in 2020 and passed for 625 yards and five touchdown with no turnovers.

Oregon State quarterback will enter the portal

Nolan started the first five games of the season and threw for over 900 yards and seven touchdown.

He was out for the rest of the season because of a neck injury. Nolan has started 17 games in his career and has thrown for 4,153 yards and 32 touchdown.

Nebraska wide receiver entering portal

After one season with the Cornhuskers, Decoldest Crawford is going to enter the portal.

During the team scrimmage in August, Crawford suffered a season-ending injury. After Matt Rhule was hired as Nebraska's next head coach, he decided to transfer to another school.

Virginia quarterback enters the portal as grad transfer

There is a person in the portal.

He threw for 2,210 yards and seven touchdown for the Virginia in the year 2022. He has 9,034 passing yards and 58 touchdown passes in his career. He had 4,450 passing yards in 2021.

Rhode Island offensive lineman to enter portal

The right tackle decided to go to the portal.

During his first two years with the Rams, he started 22 games and has already received offers from Nebraska, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Louisville, Syracuse, Penn State, Minnesota, Oregon, and South Carolina.

Rhode Island finished the season with a 5 game winning streak.

Texas A&M defensive end to portal

The portal will open on December 5.

He only played in two games this season for the A&M.

Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State were some of the schools that offered.

Cincinnati center entering portal

Jake Renfro entered the transfer portal on Thursday.

He was unable to play this fall due to a knee injury. Renfro has started 19 games in the last two years. Renfro was able to enter the portal before Fickell left for Wisconsin.

Iowa wide receiver to enter portal

Keagan Johnson will enter the transfer portal after missing most of the season due to injury.

In his freshman year, Johnson was the leader in Iowa's receiving corps with 362 yards. He scored two touchdown and had 18 reception. He played in two games this season and had two catches.

Maryland linebacker in portal as grad transfer

In two starts for the Maryland, Ahmad McCullough had 45 tackles and two turnovers.

Austin Fontaine is a lineman.

Kentucky running back enters portal

He had 58 runs this year. He had 616 rushing yards and 6 touchdown in 2019.

Lewis will leave. Over the past two seasons, he had eight catches. He's the son of Ray Lewis. He attended two other universities.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 30

Stanford loses two more to portal

Both Stephen Herron and Jake Hornibrook are in the transfer portal. Herron had nine sacks.

The resignation of David Shaw led to the transfer of safety Jonathan McGill.

Alabama wide receivers decide to enter portal

When the portal opens next week, Traeshon and Christian will be entering. He was second on the team in touchdown catches with six and fourth in receiving yards with 331.

He was used on special teams most of the time during his time in Tuscaloosa.

Second Tulsa quarterback to enter the portal

Davis Brin became the second quarterback to enter the portal on Monday.

The second-year player started three of the last four games for the Golden Hurricane and threw for 1,133 yards and 10 touchdown.

Phillip Montgomery was dismissed by the Golden Hurricane after a disappointing season.

Oklahoma wide receiver entering portal

Two years of eligibility remain for Theo Wease, who entered the portal as a graduate transfer. He caught 19 passes for 372 yards and four touchdown in seven games for the Sooners. He had a career-high in receiving yards in the final game of the season, a loss to Texas Tech.

He had 64 catches for over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdown in his career. He was one of the top recruits in the country.

Florida State freshman defensive back enters portal

Sam was going to enter the portal. He made five total tackles, three solo tackles and one forced fumbled in his first season with the FSU.

He was ranked 55th in the 300.

Western Michigan's top rusher enters portal

Sean Tyler ran for over a thousand yards in each of the last two seasons. In four years with the Broncos, Tyler had 2,830 rushing yards, 338 receiving yards and 26 touchdown.

The coach of Western Michigan was fired this week.

Colorado safety enters portal

He played in only four games this season because of an injury. Since the beginning of the year, he has broken up five passes and recorded 128 total tackles.

Lewis was a three-star recruit in the recruiting cycle.

TUESDAY, NOV. 29

Northwestern wide receiver to go into portal

Washington will be entering the portal as a graduate student. He had career highs in receiving yards against Nebraska and Minnesota this year.

Texas backup quarterback to enter portal

Hudson Card, who lost the Longhorns' quarterback competition to Ewers, will enter the portal. Card threw for 928 yards and six touchdown for the Texas Longhorns.

Card, who was the second-best dual-threat quarterback in the 2020ESPN 300, has 1,523 passing yards, 11 touchdown and two interception during his career.

Three Syracuse WRs to enter portal

Jackson entered the portal as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining, after he led the Orange in receiving yards in his final season.

Dom Foster, a freshman who was recruited as an athlete but converted to receiver, also announced his intentions to enter the portal, as did Anthony Queeley, who had 52 catches for 600 yards and four touchdown over his first two seasons but totaled just one catch for 12 yards.

FIU's top TE to enter portal

Rivaldo Fairweather has 54 catches for 838 yards and 5 touchdown in three years with the FIU.

Fairweather was 18th in receiving yards and third in yards per reception among all tight ends at the college.

Three Duke players enter portal

The players entered the portal as graduate transfers. Shelton started eight games in 2020 and recorded 1.5 sacks and 35 tackles, however he didn't play in 2021.

Over the past four years, he caught 35 passes for 454 yards. In four seasons, Davis recorded 13 total tackles and one pass break up.

Indiana loses second quarterback to portal

The starting quarterback for Indiana will be entering the portal as a graduate transfer. Indiana had a transfer from Missouri.

He is the second Hoosiers quarterback to enter the portal. Indiana's 45-14 loss to Penn State in November was the result of fourth-year signal-caller Jack Tuttle starting the game with an injured ankle.

Iowa backup quarterback to enter portal

Spencer Petras was a starter for three years. He played in eight games for the Hawkeyes in 2021, starting two, after seeing action in two games this season.

During his time at Iowa, he threw for 822 yards with three touchdown and four turnovers.

MONDAY, NOV. 28

Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara enters portal

McNamara led Michigan to the Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2021.

After a 136-yard, one-touchdown performance against Colorado State in the opener, he lost the quarterback competition to J.J. McCarthy, who went on to win the job.

McNamara did not play the rest of the season because of a leg injury he sustained in the second half against Connecticut.

Oregon wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr. to go into portal

Thornton caught 17 passes and had a touchdown. He had a career high in receiving yards in the win over Utah.

He was the fourth-leading receiver for the team. In his career, Thornton has 26 catches for 541 yards and three touchdown

Stanford safety to portal after coach David Shaw's resignation

As a result of Shaw's resignation, safety Jonathan McGill will be entering the portal as a graduate transfer.

He was second on the team in total tackles (51), had 5.5 tackles-for-loss, seven sacks, and an intercept. For the second year in a row, the team went 3-9.

Tulsa quarterback to enter the portal

Davis Brin decided to transfer after Philip Montgomery was fired.

Brin did not start three of the Golden Hurricane's final four games of the season.

He has 5,660 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes in his career.

Texas A&M's former top-100 running back recruit to enter portal

He chose Texas A&M over Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma.

He had 10 carries for 39 yards and two touchdown in six games, but didn't get a single carry after October 22.

The Texas A&M players plan to enter the portal.

SUNDAY, NOV. 27

Missouri wideout announces intentions to enter portal

The sophomore wide receiver was sixth in the SEC in reception and third in the conference in receiving yards.

Three of the 12 touchdown passes thrown by Brady Cook went to Lovett.

Georgia Tech starting QB to enter portal

Jeff Sims was a three-year starter for the YellowJackets.

Sims, who was ranked No. 88 in the 2020 class, hurt his foot in a loss to Virginia in October and didn't play in the rest of the season.

Sims has 4,464 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes in his career.

Alabama DB and former top juco prospect enters portal

Khyree Jackson entered the portal on November 23.

Jackson played in nine games for the Tide and recorded seven tackles. He picked Alabama over offers from other states.

Several FCS prospects enter portal

Several players hit the portal the week of Nov. 21 after the conclusion of some seasons in the Football Championship Series. There are notables.

  • Quarterbacks include Tyler Vander Waal (Idaho State) and Jimmy Weirick.

  • From Harvard, there are defensive lineman Truman Jones and safety James Herring.

  • Cornerback Aljareek Malry, linebacker Stone Snyder, wide receiver Leroy Thomas, and defensive tackle CharlesDixon came from the same school.

  • From Bucknell: safety Jonathan Searcy.

  • A few more notables include Duquesne wide receiver Abdul Janneh, Missouri State offensive tackle Ian Fitzgerald and Merrimack wide receiver Jacari Carter.

Wisconsin's former top-15 recruit enters after dismissal

Jim Leonhard said that Brown was dismissed from the team because of an internal incident.

He would enter the portal after he was dismissed.

Boise State starting QB enters portal

The quarterback entered the portal on the 27th of September. The four-year starter had 6,605 passing yards and 41 touchdown.

In four games, he had thrown for 497 yards, six touchdown and three turnovers. He will have two years of eligibility left if he leaves before the fifth game of the season.
