There are threats and desperate attempts to reverse them.
It can be seen that every population of every species is in decline. There are many populations that are stable or growing. Some crises are captured in these photos. There are images of threats unfolding, of desperate attempts at species defence and of the beautiful living world that is at stake.
Montreal, Canada, will host the 15th United Nations biodiversity conference on December 7. At the meeting, delegates will attempt to agree on goals to reverse the decline of species by mid-century. A transformation in society's relationship with biodiversity is promised by the current draft framework agreement.
There is help for the seaweed. Climate change is killing the forests of giant kelp on the east coast of Australia. Abalone and crayfish are both economically important species and part of the local food culture. Researchers at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies are breeding plants that can tolerate warmer weather and replanting them along the coast in a trial to see if they can restore a landscape-scale restoration.
An elusive animal. The Amur leopard is found in northeastern China and eastern Russia. The main threats to these cats are habitat loss and inbreeding. There are around 100 left.
Vaccination of the leopards against the canine distemper virus is one of the proposed strategies for bolstering the population.
The person was caught in the cross fire. One third of the world's mountain gorillas can be found in the most biodiverse protected area in Africa.
It is said that you can destroy an environment overnight whereas protecting it is a constant effort. War, refugee crises, and oil companies are threatening the viability of the area. Fighters from the M23 group are currently in the park. The park may be opened to oil and gas exploration.
The Corroboree Frog. There are two species of corroboree frog, Pseudophryne pengilleyi and Pseudophryne corroboree, that have been hit hard by chytrid fungus, which can be fatal. The habitat of the frog was torched in the bush fires. The northern corroboree frog is bred at Taronga Zoo in Australia and is part of captive-breeding efforts. Plans are being designed for a world in which Frogs are not going to be eradicated any time soon.
There are fires in cacti. The 2020 Bighorn Fire in Arizona is being fought by a helicopter. The desert was once thought to be fireproof. The spread of introduced grasses has changed the landscape. There are blankets of dry tinder created by dead grasses. The saguaro cactus is one of the native species that is killed by fires.
Grasses introduced by the roots should be ripped out or killed with a pesticide. Fire breaks can help to contain future fires.
A fleet of fishing boats. The fishing boats are based in Zhoushan, China, but they might travel to Africa, South America or evenAntarctica before dropping their nets. Rich nations tend to go further out when they overfish. The European Union, Japan, South Korea, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan spent over one billion dollars subsidizing their fishing fleets in order to harvest exclusive economic zones outside their borders. An international treaty that could ban such subsidies is under discussion. According to the US-based non-profit organization, the agreement would end a significant proportion of fishing in the water in a short period of time.
