The Dolphins sacked Garoppolo with 22 seconds left in the first quarter. Garoppolo's left foot was caught underPhillips as he was taken down.
Garoppolo was taken to the locker room for further evaluation after he hobbled to the sideline. Garoppolo was ruled out of the game with 8:39 left in the second quarter.
Brock Purdy, who replaced Garoppolo, threw a touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk on his first drive. The 49ers defeated the Dolphins with the help of Purdy.
Garoppolo is the second starting quarterback to be injured this season. Lance was placed on injured reserve after breaking his fibula in the win over Seattle. Since Lance's injury, Garoppolo has started every game for the Niners.

The Niners used the 262nd and final pick on Purdy, who was "Mr. Irrelevant". He had played in three games before Sunday, going 4-of-9 for 66 yards and an interception.
