England will play France in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday after a convincing win over Senegal.

Jordan Pickford made an outstanding save from Boulaye Dia in the first half to help his side survive a nervy opening and win the game.

Jude Bellingham was England's star man, setting up the first goal for Jordan Henderson with a perfect cross after 38 minutes then having a hand in the second on the stroke of half time, combining with Phil Foden as captain Harry Kane powered home his first of the tournament.

It left Kane just one behind Wayne Rooney's all-time record of 53 England goals and he now has the perfect stage to write a new chapter in the history of England.

Foden was the creator once more as England wrapped the game up in the 57th minute, crossing for Saka to flick a delicately placed finish past Mendy.

It was a perfect night for the manager, who kept faith with Foden and kept Marcus Rashford out of the lineup. He dealt with a family issue.

England's World Cup taking shape

When England clicked, they showed a level of creation that made them a genuine contender for the World Cup.

When they tried to expose Harry Maguire's lack of pace, they did twice, but once Bellingham took control and England were able to cruise to victory.

The 19-year-old has already had an outstanding World Cup, but he now has power and production to add to his reputation.

The way in which Bellingham and Foden combined for England's second goal was a glimpse into a golden future.

Foden scored against Wales and created two goals in the World Cup. The timing is perfect for what will be the sternest of tests against France and the peerlessMbappe.

Bellingham is allowed to flourish by Henderson and Declan Rice, as well as by Saka and Foden.

It is a good sign for England that Kane is now on the goal trail and is close to Rooney. He sometimes needs to play his way into major tournaments, as at Euro 2020, and will have been delighted to see how quickly he finished the chance he got for the second goal.

Pickford's vital contribution

Pickford made a crucial intervention against Senegal that paved the way for England to get their act together and win the game.

Pickford made a strong one-handed stop from Dia's shot as England struggled in defence in the first phase.

After an even first half, England were ahead and never looked back as they closed out the win with plenty to spare.

Pickford's place in the England side has been questioned from time to time but never by the manager who has total faith in a player who has never let him down.
