Anna Sorokin believes that Sam Bankman-Fried is trying to lay the groundwork for a legal defense over his role in FTX's collapse and the billions of dollars that have been lost.
She said that he was trying to save himself. If he's going to be prosecuted, he's going to argue that it's the girlfriend's fault because he didn't know about the debt. The seeds of that are already visible.
The story of Sorokin's scamming banks and hotels out of around $200,000 was adapted into a limited series on the internet. The Anna Delvey Foundation was to be built under the fake name of Anna Delvey.
Bankman-Fried is also fighting accusations of fraud.
FTX collapsed in November due to reports that it appeared to commingle funds with Alameda Research, a separate company he owned and which was run by a former romantic partner. Civil enforcement or criminal charges are possible because of his actions.
If he had more time to find investors, Bankman-Fried claims he could have saved the exchange from collapsing. He said he was giving interviews against the advice of his legal team.
FTX executives didn't seem to agree with his optimism. The New York Times reported that a top lawyer for the company said Bankman-Fried's plan to save the exchange by shoring up more investments had a small chance of success. After Bankman-Fried resigned, John Jay Ray III took over as FTX's CEO.
"Never in my career have I seen a complete failure of corporate controls and a complete lack of trustworthy financial information," Ray wrote in the bankruptcy filing for the firm.
Bankman- Fried's pleas to the media are insincere according to Sorokin.
She said it was a Ponzi scheme.
According to Sorokin, Bankman- Fried is trying to cultivate a more innocent image in the public eye. She does not believe it.
She said that if he was a female he would either be portrayed as a total con or completely inadequate and unsuitable. He gets to play an earnest fellow who is trying to make it right by the customers.
She thinks Bankman-Fried would have continued his scheme had Changpeng Zhao not started the FTX version of a bank run.
She said that he didn't expect it to blow up that way. It's only because of CZ.
Bankman-Fried claimed that he had only $100,000 left. It wouldn't make sense for a person who has poured millions into political advocacy groups to pay for his normal expenses.
I don't think he had a single thing in common. Being able to get one through regular life expenses is not accepted. She said he was just looking for pity. I'm pretty sure that all the political action committees were accepting something other than digital currency. He had to live off of company funds.
Bankman- Fried and his attorneys didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.
Sorokin paid back all of the banks and institutions that she took from using the money she received from streaming service, but she is still appealing her conviction. Her attorney argued during her trial that her actions should be seen as civil. The lawyer said that she always intended to repay the money.
She is living under home confinement in Manhattan as she appeals her possible deportation to Germany.
She has maintained that her original plans were legit. Her lawyer argued at trial that the Anna Delvey Foundation wasn't successful because she didn't have the management skills she needed.
Billions of dollars are the differences between their situations. Sorokin acknowledged that Bankman- Fried's narrative that he was blindsided, rather than willfully preying on FTX's customers may be legitimate. It doesn't make her feel better.
I don't know if he was in control or if he's trying to cover it up. If he was negligent, it was frightening.
