The as-told-to essay was written by a former DoorDash employee. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their privacy. The conversation has been edited for clarity and length. Around 4 a.m., I received a message in my inbox. The subject line is "Your employment with Door Dash." I was very confused after opening it. My role at DoorDash was being impacted by layoffs, according to an email I received. I was completely shocked by the fact that there was no warning.
We had an all-hands meeting with the CEO but no layoffs were mentioned. I found out this week that I was being laid off. It is not good.
I think it's reasonable and generous that I'll get 17 weeks' pay as part of my package.
I knew I had work meetings that day so I went to open my laptop and log in. I lost access to the device when I was locked out.
I messaged my colleagues to see if they were experiencing the same thing, and some of them were let go as well. They kept people that were needed.
I was laid off from Doordash and it was very sad. The sad part is that my role at DoorDash was part of a long-term career plan, and I really liked what I was doing there.
I was dependent on the job to remain in the US. My green card was supposed to be sponsored by DoorDash. I am no longer eligible for residency in the US without their sponsorship.
You can't have an H1B visa if you have a job. You have a certain number of days to find a new job after losing it.
I am under a lot of pressure to get a job quickly because of the visa situation.
Being laid off has made me think differently. I woke up on Thursday and Friday feeling like small fights with friends were unimportant. I used to like to watch TV but now I don't.
Stress is increased when you know the job market isn't good. I'm reaching out to recruiters who contacted me before, and I'm also reaching out to people onLinkedIn.
It doesn't bode well that the tech industry isstruggling. I don't know if I'll be able to keep my visa if I can't find another job soon.
I could apply to graduate school in the US or I could have to return to my home country. I can only rely on myself because my family is not in the country.
I'm not sure what's going to happen in the next few months. I don't have time to process everything because I have to find a new job.
It's saddening and shocking. The biggest challenge I've faced is this one.
The CEO of DoorDash was asked in an all-hands meeting on November 17 about what factors determined its year-to- two-year strategy for its cost structure and managing its relationship with its largest shareholders. "I think we have a really robust business and to me, it's about being more and more efficient over time."
