The B-21 Raider is a stealth bomber.
The newest aircraft in the U.S. fleet were unveiled in a ceremony live on the internet. The new bomber will be the cornerstone of the Air Force's bomber fleet once it enters service in a few years.
The B-21 Raider is the first strategic bomber in more than 30 years. America has enduring advantages in ingenuity and innovation. It's proof of the Department's long-term commitment to build advanced capabilities that will fortify America's ability to deter aggression.
A promotional video was shown during the ceremony.
There are the most dangerous space weapons.
The plane is the most capable stealth bomber ever built.
The next-generation aircraft defines what this nation is capable of. We are opening a new era in technology for national defense.
The B-21 Raider was revealed in dramatic fashion during the livestream, with the plane covered by a massive shroud that slid away as the bomber emerged from its hangar.
According to the Associated Press, little is known about the capabilities and specifications of the B-21. The B-21's landing gear is larger than the B-2 Spirit, which has a wingspan of 172 feet, but not the aircraft's exact wingspan.
The back of the aircraft has not been shown to the public. We don't know much about the exhausts of its engines, which give clues to its flight capabilities. Don't even know what the B-21 looks like.
The B-21's production featured sophisticated manufacturing techniques and new advanced materials that allow sensors, communication antennas and air data systems, according to The War Zone. This would make the aircraft even harder to detect with radar and other sensors.
The Air Force has a secretive space plane.
The Air Force has released information about the aircraft's capabilities, but they are limited to generalities. "Developed with the next generation of stealth technology, advanced networking capabilities and an open systems architecture, the B-21 is designed for the high end threat environment," the manufacturer's fact sheet reads.
The B-21 can be operated in either crewed or uncrewed configurations and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. The open systems architecture means that the aircraft can be quickly upgraded with new capabilities and subsystems as they are developed.
The B-21 Raider costs almost 700 million dollars for each plane. According to a Time exclusive, the program is expected to cost the United States taxpayers $203 billion over the next 30 years. A minimum of 100 B-21 Raiders is what the Air Force wants.
The first flight of the B-21 won't happen until later in the decade. There are six models in various stages of development at the facility. The ground testing of the aircraft's engines and subsystems will begin before any of the advanced bombers are ready to fly.
