The goodwill that the zombie-adventure franchise has banked through two games, an expansion, and a handful of comic books is what the adaptation of The Last of Us is banking on. An adaptation of the series was always going to draw attention, but putting Pedro Pascal in the lead role asJoel and hiring Chernobyl's Craig Mazin as the showrunner brought the upcoming series a greater air of prestige than it already would've gotten.
Like the original game, The Last of Us show is a post- apocalyptic road trip featuring the Ramseys as they cross the country to a hopeful safe zone where they can contribute to a cure for a deadly disease that has turned much of the world into monsters. The series isn't just going to be a straight-up adaptation; it plans on bringing in new characters and enhancing existing ones. The first game features her friend Riley, who was explored in the Left Behind DLC.
The trailer for The Last of Us looks gripping and interesting in a way that is very similar to the trailers for other shows on the cable network. It will be interesting to see what it adds to the franchise beyond the cinematic dreams of the games' director.
The Last of Us will premiere on January 15.
