There is a high-level member of the U.S. government who isn't mincing words.

The Chinese government could theoretically manipulate TikTok's recommendation algorithm that can be used for traditional espionage operations according to the FBI director. During a speaking engagement at the University of Michigan, Wray voiced his concerns about the availability of TikTok users' data to China.

"All of these things are in the hands of a government that doesn't share our values and that has a mission that's very much at odds with what's in the best interests of the U.S." It should worry us.

The short-form video social network has been under government scrutiny for the last couple of years due to concerns about data privacy and general uneasiness between the US and China. TikTok was tried to be banned from app stores. In the next two years, there will be congressional hearings about user data.

TikTok confirmed last month that it has employees in China who have access to user data, though it insists there are protocols in place to make sure it is done properly. It is not the only social network with privacy issues. Hive was the victim of a massive data hack this week.

It doesn't appear that the U.S. government's scrutiny of TikTok will end soon.
