Gomez: USA tactics naive in loss to Netherlands (1:46)

The USA's exit from the World Cup at the last 16 stage was mishandled by Louis van Gaal, according to Herc Gomez. 1:45

8:28 PM AST

The US men's national team were knocked out of the World Cup in the round of 16 by the Dutch.

The Dutch scored two goals in the first half and never looked back. The US pulled a goal back in the 76th minute through Haji Wright, but the Netherlands scored in the 81st minute to give them some breathing room.

It was disappointing for the US because of the team's success in getting out of the group stage.

Canada and Mexico will co- host the World Cup in a few years.

Player ratings, highlights, notable moments, post-game quotes, and key statistics are included.

Rapid reaction

1. Dumfries on fire as Dutch execute near perfect tactical plan

The USA entered this game with a lot of confidence after reaching the knockout stages. The perception that the Netherlands side wasn't up to the standards set by their predecessors made them more confident.

The Dutch showed the quality discrepancy between the two countries.

The tactical game plan was very effective. The Dutch were willing to allow the US to have possession and then attack in transition. Asking the US to do things it wasn't good at was the result. Some of the Netherlands' strengths include being able to play through the US press and creating transition opportunities.

The quality from the Netherlands was obvious on Depay's goal. Depay was able to finish with authority because the Oranje played through the US press to find him on the wing.

The Netherlands scored in the first half with a cut back pass that Blind hammered home. The US threw everything forward in an effort to get back in the game. It was left to Dumfries to hit Blind's ball.

2. USA lacked sharpness all over the field

It might have been different. Christian Pulisic's shot was saved by Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert after Tyler Adams passed over the Dutch defense.

If the US had gotten its nose in front, what would have happened? The US was forced to play from behind when Depay scored seven minutes later.

There were more than one chance. Sergio Dest made some nice moves from the right wing, but couldn't get a shot on goal. He had another chance to run in space, but his centering feed was too far behind two runners.

There were also problems on the other end.

The biggest problem the US defense had on this night was its inability to detect danger. Adams failed to see his run and was several yards behind Depay when he rifled his shot home. Dest was a culprit on the second goal, but didn't notice that Blind was in the box.

The disappointing play from the entire team is a big disappointment for the US. The US will have to wait another decade.

Will Berhalter be in charge? It's up for debate. He did a good job getting the US out of the group stage, but the lack of playing time for him is puzzling. Bob Bradley and Juergen Klinsmann both failed to make it to a second World Cup despite being given a second cycle by the US.

3. The USA's lack of a striker comes back to bite them

There are some things a team can't run from, and the US had two big concerns going into this tournament. There was concern about the center-backs, and while the distribution wasn't to the level of previous games, overall Tim Ream, Walker Zimmerman and CAMERON CARTER-Vickers held up well.

The lack of a No. 9 who is reliable in scoring goals never got solved. He never looked comfortable with the pace of the game. The FC Dallas player had not played since October 24.

Haji Wright entered the match in the 65th minute, and that tactical maneuver only lasted about 20 minutes, as Haji Wright entered the match in the 65thminute. Wright's goal seemed to be accidental in the 76th minute.

It's a move that many US fans have been clamoring for since the start of the tournament and the sight of Reyna playing in that spot will no doubt stick in the minds of many US fans.

Berhalter's hand was forced by the fact that Josh Sargent wasn't able to play because of an ankle injury. It seemed like he should have had more time to get used to it.

With Wright's introduction, the hole at the strikers position was shown even more clearly. He had a great chance in the 75th minute when he picked off a back pass, but his shot was cleared off the line by another player. His goal seemed to be the result of luck, when his cross looped into the net.

Regardless of who the manager is, finding a solution at that position is a priority.

Player ratings

The USA has Matt Turner, Tim Ream, Walker Zimmerman, Sergino Dest, Yunus Musah, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie.

Subs: DeAndre Yedlin 5, Jordan Morris 5.

Holland: Andries Noppert 7, Nathan Aké 6, Jurrin Timber 7, Daley Blind 7, Frenkie de Jong 7, Marten de Roon 6, Denzel Dumfries 9 and Memphis Depay 7.

Wout Weghorst, Steven Bergwijn, Matthijs de Ligt, and Xavi Simons were on the subs.

Best and worst performers

BEST: Denzel Dumfries, Netherlands

There was a lot of space on the right wing for Dumfries to exploit. The US would have killed for this type of precision wide and his goal was just reward for an outstanding performance.

WORST: Jesus Ferreira, United States

There were many people who wanted to be a candidate. Tyler Adams was off his game. He was replaced at halftime by Gio Reyna, who made little to no contribution to the US.

Highlights and notable moments

The Netherlands took the lead quickly.

In the middle of the field, Memphis Depay crossed a ball into the box, and it was a routine finish: his one-time strike was close to Matt Turner.

The Americans wanted to get to halftime down by one goal so they could regroup and try to get back into the game.

In the last minute of the first half, the Netherlands doubled their lead and gave the USA a bigger hole to climb out of.

The US pulled one back in the 76th minute, but it appeared to be a mistake, as the ball popped off the foot of Haji Wright.

The US could not deliberately use the chances they had.

The dreams of an American comeback were quickly dashed as the Dutch side's third goal in the 81st minute gave them a 3-1 win.

The World Cup was over.

After the match: What the players and managers said

The USA came up short but not because of a lack of effort but because of a good group of guys. The guys poured everything they had into this game.

When you play a team with so much quality, and you give them three, four chances, they're going to put three or four away. I'm proud of the boys. It's a lot of progress for US Soccer if we can hang with some of the best teams in the world. We need to keep pushing because we're not there yet but we're close.

The more time we have together the more growth we should have. We need to develop individual players for moments like this so we can come out on top. It comes down to the moments and the experience team got the better of us. We need to maximize our youth's potential in the time we have left.

Adams said that Berhalter told him to keep his head high. We need to leave the game with our heads held high.

Weston McKennie said the USA wanted to change the way the world views American soccer. We know that this could have gone one of two ways. We thought we could win this game. I think we're going to use this other part of the story and have another four years to prepare because soccer is very unpredictable.

The silence in the locker room makes it difficult to go there. Tonight was not our best performance because we know what we put out was not our best. We weren't able to put our best foot forward when we had top opportunities against opponents.
