Leboeuf slams USA defending in World Cup loss to Netherlands (1:29)

The USA lost to the Netherlands in the last 16 of the World Cup. There is a time and a place for it.

The United States was eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday after a loss to the Netherlands.

The Dutch scored two first-half goals and left the US side with an uphill battle. Despite halving the deficit in the second half, the US was knocked out of the tournament by the Netherlands.

His left-footed strike was stifled by Andries Noppert as he tried to give the US an early lead.

The US made a bright start but couldn't take advantage of their chances and were punished by the Netherlands, who scored on their first chance.

The ball was worked out to the right wing by a free-flowing, one touch-buildup play. His first-time ball was cut back to Memphis Depay who finished past Matt Turner into the far corner.

The lack of experience was a problem for the US against a more experienced team.

It comes down to the margins. When you play a team like that, you give them three, four chances, and they are going to take all of them.

There was optimism for the US before the match when Berhalter named Christian Pulisic in his starting lineup even though he was injured against Iran.

The side has been criticized for being conservative, but they only conceded one time in their first three games. Goalkeeper Noppert had to be alert to maintain their strong defensive record and he blocked a fiercely struck effort by Tim Weah in the 43rd minute.

The Dutch took a 2-0 lead before the end of the first half as the US found a good pace.

The ball was delivered to Blind, who stroked a first-time strike past Turner.

Early in the second half, Tim Ream saw his effort cleared off the line, before Weston McKennie struck over.

The Dutch looked to put the game out of reach with time running out. Turner had to make two saves to stop Teun Koopmeiners and Steven Bergwijn.

Turner's heroics sparked hope for the US and they halved their deficit with 14 minutes to go thanks to a strange goal by Haji Wright.

The ever-present Pulisic squared the ball to Wright who, under pressure, unconventionally flicking the ball up his leg and looping his finish over the head of the towering Noppert

The US was not helped by the fact that Dumfries followed up his two assists with a goal of his own to ensure victory for the Dutch.

Blind was able to bend a perfect cross to the back post.

The US team's progress was shown in the match.

Adams was proud of the boys' performance. Some of the best players in the world can be seen hanging out with us.

That is a lot of progress for US soccer. We need to keep pushing because we're not there yet but we're close.

The more time we spend together the more growth we should have. We need to develop individually to more mature players in order to come out on top.

The US coach praised his team.

"This is a difficult one to handle, it's such a good group of guys, such a close group of guys and we came up short today but not for a lack of trying, not for a lack of effort." I think the guys did everything they could to win this game.
