The official closing date for Disney's Splash Mountain attraction was announced this week, more than two years after the company said it would close the ride due to its perpetuation of racial stereotypes.

The movie Song of the South was the basis for Splash Mountain. The film has been criticized for its depiction of plantation life.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said that "Song of the South" was not appropriate in today's world.

One year after the end of The Princess and the Frog, the ride at both Disney World and Disneyland will be renamed "Tia's Bayou Adventure".

Disney stated in a previous statement that the re-theming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today. It speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year that the new concept is inclusive.

More than 93,000 people signed a petition to save Splash Mountain.

Splash Mountain is an icon at Magic Kingdom and loved by millions of fans around the world. It would erode the nostalgia that lives in Disney World and take away a bit of the magic.

A petition calling for the attraction's closing received more than 20,000 signatures.
