The Prince of Wales's Earthshot fund has awarded a million dollars to scientists who have replaced plastic with seaweed.

The prize is named after former US president John F Kennedy who launched the Moonshot challenge in the 1960s to put a person on the moon in ten years.

Five people were announced as winners of Prince William's award at a ceremony in Boston. He and the Princess of Wales were joined by a number of famous people.

The prince said that the Earthshot solutions proved that we can overcome our planet's greatest challenges. We can change our future if we support and scale them. My hope is that the Earthshot legacy will continue to grow, helping our communities and our planet to thrive.

Notpla is a UK based company that is creating an alternative to plastic packaging. An alternative to plastic made from seaweed and plants can be used to create a range of packaging products, such as a bubble to hold liquids, a coating for food containers, and a paper for the cosmetics and fashion industry. More than one million food boxes have been made for Just Eat.

No one wants to live in a world filled with plastic waste but it's not too late to act. There's never been a better time to use natural solutions.
